Oprah Donates Half Million to Newark High School

Celebrity Sizzle Award of the Week goes to...  Billionaire extraordinaire Oprah Winfrey who donated half a million dollars to West Side High School in Newark, NJ.  Ms. Winfrey stopped by the high school to surprise Principal Akbar Cook, who started the “Lights On” program to give students a place to hang out after hours. According to NBC News, the program has existed for years and runs from 6pm-11pm. The program provides students with meals. It gained national attention when the principal installed washers and dryers after students told him they were being bullied because they couldn’t afford to wash their clothes. Students were even skipping school to avoid being bullied. Principal Akbar Cook was also on the Ellen DeGeneres’ show twice where she donated $50,000, each time, towards his efforts. Oprah caught wind of his story and wanted to offer some financial support to his cause.
